MARINE SAFETY INFORMATION BULLETIN

[MSIB # 25-11]

August 30, 2011

Sakonnet River, Portsmouth/Tiverton, Rhode Island

ROUTE 24 BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION & STATUS OF CHANNEL

Main channel:  The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has advised the Coast Guard that construction of the new Route 24 bridge in the main channel of the Sakonnet River will not begin until September 6, 2011.

Consequently, the main channel will remain open to all vessel traffic through Monday, Labor Day, September 5, 2011.

On September 6 and 7, the entire Sakonnet River channel at the Route 24 bridge will be closed to all vessel traffic to allow construction barges and cranes to be positioned in the main channel, and to permit Coast Guard vessels to install buoys and other aids to navigation marking the temporary channel.

Temporary channel:  A temporary channel will be established on the west side of the Sakonnet River by the old and new Route 24 bridges, and the channel is scheduled to open to vessel traffic on September 8, 2011.  The following navigation safety measures will apply in the temporary channel:

1.     Maximum air draft is 47 feet

2.     Maximum hull draft is 17 feet

3.     Transits of the temporary channel are limited to:

a.      One-hour before and after slack tide (see attached sheet), and

b.     One-way traffic only (i.e., do not enter the temporary channel if another vessel is approaching or already in the channel in the opposite direction)

4.     Vessels equipped with VHF radio and intending to transit the temporary channel should make appropriate securite calls on VHF channel 16 to notify mariners in the area.

Mariners will be advised via Marine Safety Information Bulletins, Local Notice to Mariners, and Marine Safety Information Broadcasts of any changes to the status of the Sakonnet River channel in the vicinity of the new Route 24 bridge.  Mariners should always use extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of construction activity at the new Route 24 Sakonnet River bridge, and they should monitor VHF channel 22A for the latest safety-related navigation information.

When the temporary channel is established, a color graphic will be available at http://homeport.uscg.mil/sene which depicts the final channel configuration.

Questions regarding this bulletin may be addressed to Mr. Edward G. LeBlanc at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, 401-435-2351.
